AT THE ROOT OF TOOTH PAIN

In cases in which tooth decay is left untreated, bacteria may infect the tooth pulp and lead to an abscess. Symptoms include aching or throbbing pain in the tooth, sensitivity to hot or cold, chewing pain, and fever. At this point, endodontic (root canal) treatment is indicated. This involves removal of the nerve and vascular tissue (pulp) from the root and pulp chamber, as well as any associated decayed tooth structure. This allows the tooth to be spared from extraction. After the inside of the tooth is carefully shaped and cleaned, it is filled and sealed, awaiting a crown. Preserving the tooth root in this fashion helps avert the bone loss that often accompanies loss of the tooth root.

Root canal treatment is highly successful. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime. This column has been brought to you in the interest of better dental health. P.S. The pain associated with root canal therapy is due exclusively to the pain caused by the abscess and not the treatment, which removes the cause of the pain.

OF GROWING RELEVANCE

If you were to lose a tooth due to trauma, infection, decay, or periodontal disease, wouldn’t it be great if you could simply grow a replacement tooth? After all, when sharks lose teeth, the ones from the row behind them move in to take their places. Scientists doing research on the matter think that the possibility exists. In fact, geneticists have recently discovered the gene responsible for switching on the replacement-tooth mechanism. The so-called Osr2 gene resides below the top layer of gum tissue (epithelium) in mesenchymal tissue, where it combines efforts with two other genes to form budding teeth. Manipulating this gene is no doubt a tricky matter, but who knows what the future may hold?

This informative column has been brought to you as a public service. Early visits to your dentist can help ensure healthy and beautiful teeth. At the office of DR. SUSAN WEINBERG, D.M.D., we provide a full range of dental treatments, including preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry. Except in rare cases, gum disease can be prevented through daily plaque removal by brushing, cleaning between teeth with floss or interdental cleaners, eating a balanced diet, and regularly visiting us for professional cleanings. Call 503.968.1696 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 9735 S.W. Shady Lane, Suite 307. We Provide Excellence in Dentistry.

P.S. Equally intriguing to scientists is the finding that the Osr2 gene also is associated with cleft palates. Further research may also reveal ways to prevent this birth defect.

SMOKELESS NOT HARMLESS

A recent study shows that use of snuff and chewing tobacco by adolescent boys in this country has surged over the past few years. According to a report from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, there has been a 30 percent increase in the rate of smokeless tobacco use among boys aged 12-17 years over a recent five-year period. This finding is worrying on at least two important fronts: First, smokeless tobacco is as addictive as cigarettes and does not assist in weaning oneself from smoking. Second, using smokeless tobacco products increases the risk of oral cancer. Because dentists are usually the first to see signs of oral cancer, they have a stake in preventing it.

Up to a certain point, if you quit, your body can heal itself…but the longer you use spit tobacco, the bigger your risk of getting cancer. Don’t let it be too late! Chewing tobacco and snuff can cause mouth and throat cancer. At the office of DR. SUSAN WEINBERG, D.M.D., we will be happy to discuss any dental concerns you may have. Any time you have a question, please don’t hesitate to ask. Good dentistry is more than excellent clinical skills and state-of-the-art equipment.
