Periodontal Disease And Diabetes

gum disease
Periodontal disease is gum disease. There are two forms of this disease. Gingivitis is the first and it is a mild inflammation to the gums. The second form is known as periodontitis. This one is much more serious.
With periodontitis, the inflammation is much more severe and can gradually destroy the bone that holds the teeth in place.
A visit to Dr. Weinberg will determine whether or not you have gingivitis or periodontitis. X-rays can show the amount of bone damage. Bleeding gums are a sign of these diseases. Healthy gums are pink and firm.
When plaque builds up on the teeth next to the gums, the gums can become inflamed as the bacteria in the plaque will breed the infection.
With good oral hygiene, gingivitis is reversible. The inflamed and swollen gums can return to their normal state.
Periodontitis, which is the more serious form of gum disease, comes about when there is neglect in removing the plaque, allowing the plaque to accumulate over a long period of time. The gum disease becomes more sever and the teeth begin to detach from the gums, thus, creating a space between the gums and the teeth known as pockets. As these pockets become deeper, the jawbone which holds the teeth in place begins the process of deterioration. This gradual deterioration is painless but has devastating consequences. Gums begin to recede and teeth become loose.

People with diabetes have an increased risk of periodontal disease. It is still not known the exact reasons why, but those individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop periodontal disease.
Some of the factors that contribute to periodontal disease being more prevalent in those with diabetes are:
The immune system in diabetics is often weaker than others.
Diabetics are often over weight and excessive body fat can be a contributing factor.
Small and delicate blood vessels known as capillaries in the gums could reduce the blood supply to the gums. This can greatly limit the action of defense cells.
Diabetics often suffer from slow wound healing and healing in the gums slows down as well.
It is important to note that diabetics who control their blood sugar levels will be more successful in fighting periodontal disease than those that have poor control issues.
Cleaning your teeth at least twice a day will help you to prevent gum disease. It is very important to clean the teeth where the gum meets the tooth. If you have teeth that are overlapping or are hard to get to with a regular tooth brush, try using a single tufted brush to get into the hard to reach areas. Always floss as well.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental technology is providing patients with a vast amount of options for cosmetic dentistry. Dentistry has evolved, and patients are looking for esthetics, not mere treatment.

Patients concerns are not just health related anymore as they are now concerned with how their teeth look.

At the dental office of Susan Weinberg, patients are looking to enhance their smile. They are asking about teeth whitening, veneers and implants.

Minimal invasion is also a concern when asking about improving the esthetics of one’s smile. So what patients want to know is how they can get a great smile with the least amount of work.
The Zoom! Teeth whitening system is used in our office because it uses a compound that is easy on sensitive teeth. The real power in this system comes from the light that is used in conjunction with the compound that is applied to the teeth. The light that is used to activate the compound with the Zoom! System is much more effective than that of other systems. Our results are proof that the system is the most effective.

A professional teeth whitening system is far more effective than any home remedy such as brushing with baking soda or lemon juice. The teeth whitening procedure reduces the signs of aging teeth. At the same time, tea, coffee and tobacco stains are affected. It works best for those who have healthy gums and healthy un-restored teeth. Subsequently, if you have a normally healthy mouth, you can be sure that such a treatment will have quality results.

Cosmetic dentistry also uses the technique known as veneers. Veneers are thin strips of material that are applied over different flaws of the tooth.

Veneers are a professional dental treatment that applies material that is usually made from porcelain. We as dental professionals match the color of the porcelain to match other teeth. If the veneers are not a good match, they will stick out as different and affect the quality of the patient’s smile.

Veneers are also very useful in covering up those stubborn stains that never seem to be removed with routine cleanings.

Veneers are often mistaken for bonding, but they are very different. In bonding we use a soft plastic resin that is then shaped to the tooth. The veneer process is thin strips use a ceramic-based material, porcelain.

The other difference is in the life of the treatment. Bonding will last a few years while the veneer porcelain can have a life span of a decade or more.

Porcelain is much stronger than the resin used for bonding. The color of the porcelain can come much closer to the natural color of the teeth providing a more natural smile.

Cosmetic dentistry has much to but sometimes it will come down to a combination of different procedures.

In our dental office, you will receive an experienced and professional diagnosis as to what procedures will be right for you. We understand how your smile can affect your self-confidence and we will provide you with the best recommendations for your budget and lifestyle. Cosmetic dentistry can enhance your smile and impact you in a very positive way.

Teeth Whitening and What to Expect

Here at the dental office of Dr. Susan Weinberg, we use a teeth whitening system called Zoom!Zoom is one of the most popular systems for whitening teeth among dental professionals.

This system uses hydrogen peroxide based whitening gel and an activator. These two components are mixed together in the exact proportions for maximum effectiveness.

The procedure uses a mercury metal halide light that activates the Zoom teeth whitening components. The use of the mixture in combination with this violet light is what gives this product a superior tooth bleaching performance.

The light unit has a built-in infrared filter. This filter greatly minimizes the amount of heat that would otherwise hit the surface of the teeth during the whitening process.

When the light is strategically placed, it is capable of whiten both the upper and bottom teeth at the same time.

The most up to date version of this advanced power lite has 2 times more effectiveness than other units that are similar. This advanced power lite system has been proven to cause less sensitivity as well.

This teeth whitening service will take about 90 minutes for the entire treatment. The procedure is broken into a 3 part process with each application lasting about 20 minutes. The remaining 30 minutes is used for the preliminary and the post part of the treatment.

The first step in this treatment is for the doctor to determine your pre-whitening shade. The dentist can isolate teeth with a dental dam if necessary. The application of the whitening gel and activator is administered to the surface of the teeth. The power light is then used for about 20 minutes. This process is repeated two more times.

Once the three sessions are complete, the teeth are then washed thoroughly and the whitening gel is completely removed from the surface of the teeth.

A neutral sodium fluoride gel is then applied to the teeth which prevent any sensitivity to hot or cold items.

The patient will be given a tray and whitening product to be used at home along with instructions so that they can maintain the whitening process between visits. The patient will also receive instructions for follow-up.

The Zoom! Teeth whitening system is safe and effective and preformed with calibrated accuracy. The results are extraordinary and will give you a cosmetically pleasing result.
